02: The Surprising Power of Atomic Habits

Waqar Ahmed | The Atomic Habits by James Clear

This is one of the most fascinating chapters in the book “The Atomic Habits” by James Clear.

The central thesis of this chapter is divided into two points:

  1. Atomic Habits have a huge impact on human life
  2. Real success comes from focusing on the process instead of the goals

Let’s discuss each point in separate paragraphs:

Small habits might not have a large-scale impact on one’s life but surely they must not be underestimated. When small habits compound together, they create a huge difference in life. You cannot learn any subject at once; there are lots of topics that need equal attention in order to become an expert in the subject. Those small topics might not have little importance for you, but when combined together - they create a massive river of knowledge about the subject.

“When we repeat 1 percent errors, day after day, by replacing poor decisions, duplicating tiny mistakes, and rationalizing little excuses, our small choices compound into toxic results.” – James Clear

The other part of this chapter disfavor the goal-oriented strategy. Goals when created only focus on the big-picture views and they are more likely to disappoint us when we can’t achieve them because we never calculated the time and energy they will consume during the process to achieve them. Therefore, focus on the process. Make tiny milestones on a daily basis and indulge yourself in them. Don’t get deluded by the charm of goals, they are the end results. James Clear says, “Goals are about the results you want to achieve. Systems are about the processes that lead to those results.”

He also highlights some fundamental problems when we focus on Goals:

  • Winners and Losers have the same goals.
  • Achieving a goal is only a momentary change.
  • Goals restrict your happiness.
  • Goals are at odds with long-term progress.

Thank you for your company!

Steal like an artist by Austin Kleon

Book Cover (Source: Tapan Desai) Summary (informal) Everyone wants to become something in his life.  There’s no single formula to achieve one’s desired destination.  In this rapidly changing information climate, everything has become more competitive and less rewarding for those who do not pay more attention to details.  It is healthy to settle one’s mind to steal ideas productively from those who have experimented with them successfully.  There’s no harm in stealing ideas as there’s nothing as new to the world today given the scale of information exchange around the globe due to the Internet.  Since everything is already available on Google, one must go there and copy from authentic sources.  Make changes in it and sell it to the world. While you are working on the project, keep an eye on wrongs that might discredit the efforts.  Copying from a single person is plagiarism, but doing the same thing from more than one is research.  A good ar...

New Year's Gift - 2022

Waqar Ahmed | The Productivity Science What would be a better gift than changing personal thoughts from being negative to a positive person? It is okay to be cynical, it allows us to vent out our anger, but that’s not the permanent solution to a Human’s mental frame. We need to have a peaceful mind to make better judgments about our own life for the long run. That’s why it is important to have some positive life aspects. Without positivity, it would not be an easier job to find the truth and make the right decisions. The reality of life is deeply connected with the nature of reality, and without any pursuit of truth, we cannot find reality in life. This year, let’s begin by making this resolution that, no matter what, I will always find something positive about everything. It will help get rid of the trash (useless thoughts) inside of our minds and make us a better version of ourselves.

What is a Wasteman Loop & How to avoid it?

Waqar Ahmed | The Productivity Science What is a wasteman Loop? For the past few days, I have been doing a lot of social media surfacing without realizing the effects of it on my productive life. I was so indulged in social media scrolling, liking, and sharing weird cat posts that I never realized I was wasting more than 4 hours per day of my precious life. Being into some business where there is no return value or profit is what I call a wasteman loop. Every once in a while I return to this wasteman life and I have to push myself again to keep focused on the main objectives in life. This on and off productivity is what I call the loop. I’m constantly worried about two things to happen in my life, first, when I start wasting my time on social media or any other stuff that adds zero value to my life, second, the continuous fight with consistency to not return to wasteman life and still end up becoming the wasteman I loathe. How does it affect your productivity? Being a wasteman has...
